Abstract

1369792 Starting and stopping diesel engines R R ABSALOM 30 May 1972 [28 May 1971 24 June 1971] 18148/71 and 29620/71 Heading F1K [Also in Division F2] An electro-mechanical actuator 9 for operating the control shaft of a diesel engine fuel injection pump comprises a plate 18 rotated clockwise by a solenoid 11 through a pawl 28 and teeth 19. The solenoid is de-energized intermittently so that rotation of the plate 18 about the axis of the shaft 15 occurs from the intial position shown to a second position, Fig. 3 (not shown). A pawl 36 prevents anti-clockwise rotation. In the second position the solenoid is maintained energized and the pawl 36 is held away from the teeth 19 by engagement in a recess 42 of a lever 40. The plate 18 is biased anti-clockwise by a spring 22 which returns the plate to its initial position when the solenoid 11 is de-energized. In the initial position the pawl 36 is released from the lever recess 42 by engagement of a pin 46 on the plate 18 with the lever 40. In the embodiment shown the intermittent de-energization of the solenoid 11 is effected by opening a micro-switch 50 in the solenoid circuit. The operating arm 56 of the switch 50 is held in a switch closed position by a detent 60 until the detent is moved by a projection 62 on the plate 14, connected to the solenoid armature 12, in the retracted position of the armature. In the second position of the plate 18 the surface 65 on the plate engages the arm 56 to retain the switch 50 closed, a resistor 55 then being in circuit with the solenoid to provide the holding current. A solid state switching device may control solenoid energization. The shaft 15 may be connected to the injection pump shaft (70), Fig. 5 (not shown), through a coupling (67) to move the pump shaft, against the bias of a spring (75), to a fuel supply position. A cable 77' may connect the pump shaft to a connector 78 on the plate 18. The plate 18 may have opposed biasing springs which act to provide a substantially constant biasing force as it rotates.
