Abstract

1369618 Feeding and delivering sheets XEROX CORP 23 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59877/71 Heading B8R A document handling apparatus comprises a tray 27 from which documents are fed one by one from a pile 24 by transport means to a work station, the feed being controlled by control means employing light responsive document detectors to provide signals for controlling feed, the means having a light source and a plurality of light conducting fibres for leading light from the source to an operative position opposite each detector. The machine may be a copier, documents in pile 24 being separated by a roller 14, or belt not shown, and fed via double feed preventing, counter rotating rollers 35, 36, rollers 42, 43, guides 28, 40 and a belt 45 to a fixed register stop 7 at the copying position. Thereafter the documents are delivered via belt 45, guides 25, 50 and rollers 52, 53 back to a stack in the tray 27 where they are separated from the pile 24 by a pivotable retainer 26. Light pipes 79 from a single light source lead to photo-cells 73, 71, 69, 70. A separated document detected at 69 stops drive to the separating and feeding rollers and starts drive to belt 45 for a period gauged by the detector 73 which counts light flashes through an apertured disc rotated by the machine motor 58. During this time a further document is separated and held ready at rollers 42, 43. After copying, belt 45 is driven in reverse and a document trailing edge sensed at 70 switches belt 45 again to the forward drive mode and starts rotation of rollers 42, 43 to feed the next document to copying position. When the. pile 24 is empty as sensed by detector 71, the retainer is pivoted to allow the stack to fall into the pile position.
