Abstract
1369566 Controlling evaporative crystallization of sugars FIVES LILLE-CAIL 12 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 27418/72 Heading C6B [Also in Division B1] The concentration and crystallization of a solution of sugar undergoing evaporation in a plurality of inter-connected compartments provided with heating means is controlled by controlling the supply of sub-saturated solution to, or the heating of, the last and one intermediate compartment by physical measurements made on the solution, or product from the solution in these compartments. As shown in the Fig., the crystallizer 14 comprises a tank divided by partitions 18 into a plurality of compartments in which heating means 20 is arranged. The solution to be crystallized is concentrated in a conventional evaporator 12. The control system comprises a controller 32 and valve 34, for steam pressure in the concentrator 12 and crystallizer 14, a control system 38 and valve 36 for the steam flow in the heating elements, and a control system 28 and valve for supply flow to the concentrator and to the various compartments of the crystallizer. The total supply flow of the concentrator 12 and compartments 1 to 6 is controlled by a unit 40 in accordance with information supplied by measuring device 42 in compartment 3. The measuring device may be a viscometer or densimeter. The control unit 40 also maintains a constant ratio between the steam flow to the crystallizer and compartments 1 to 6 by a proportional operator 36. The supply flow rate of compartment 7 (the last) is controlled by valve 58 which is controlled by controller 60 operated by densimeter 62. Controller 64 keeps the level of the solution in compartment 7 at the desired height. The control is used in continuously operating processes.
