Abstract
1369044 Copper compounds DOW CHEMICAL CO 19 Nov 1971 53959/71 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C2] A catalyst comprising copper oxide or copper chromate that has been deactivated during use in the conversion of a nitrile to the corresponding amide is reactivated by firstly oxidizing the deactivated catalyst and then reducing the oxidized catalyst (see Division B1). One preferred method of oxidation is by means of a peroxide in the liquid phase at 20-200‹ C. Many specific peroxides are listed including hydrogen peroxide, inorganic peroxides, e.g. metal peroxides, peroxy acids or peroxy salts, and organic peroxides, e.g. hydroperoxides, dialkyl peroxides, peroxy acids and peroxy esters. The oxidation may alternatively be effected by an oxygen-containing gas at 100- 500‹ C. or by potassium permanganate or sodium dichromate. The reduction may be effected by hydrogen, ammonia, hydrazine, carbon, carbon monoxide, a lower alkane or a lower alkanol. In the examples a copper chromite catalyst is oxidized by air or a peroxide and reduced by hydrogen.
