Abstract

1368939 Underwater foundations SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 9 April 1973 [11 April 1972] 16892/73 Heading E1H A foundation, sited in water, e.g. for an island, dam or dyke, is built by depositing sand in the water, a zone of artificial seaweed being placed around the depositing point to hold the sand together. The foundation may be formed in a number of layers 10, 14, 16 with artificial seaweed zones 2, 12, 15 laid around the upper edge of each layer to enable the formation of a subsequent layer. The top layer of the foundation may be located above or below the water surface, and may be covered with artificial seaweed or by a layer of water permeable or impermeable material. The lower foundation layers may be formed by locating a zone of artificial seaweed under water and allowing sand to naturally build up within the zone.
