Abstract

1368902 I C engine valve gear MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd and JAPAN SHIPS MACHINERY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION 29 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971 (2)] 45028/72 Heading F1B I.C. engine has suction and exhaust valves operated by mechanism having a cover and mounted on a cylinder head bolted to a cylinder block and is characterized in that the mechanism comprises a plurality of rocking arms pivotally supported by the cover, means for rocking the arms and rod means interposed between one end of the rocking arms and the associated valve stems, the rod means being permitted lateral movement relative to the valve stem. The engine comprises a cylinder 31, piston 32, cylinder head 1, inlet valve 5 and exhaust valve 6. A push rod operated rocker arm 19 actuates the inlet valve and is pivotally mounted on a shaft 17 supported by a cover 34. Above the valve stem 5a, is a rod 13 which is guided for movement parallel to the axis of the valve stem. At the upper end of the rod 13 there is an intermediate member 26 which has a socket to receive the ball end of an adjustable screw 21 and is slightly smaller in diameter than the rod 13 so that it can move laterally to accommodate the horizontal component of movement of the rocker arm as it oscillates and thus relieve the valve stem of side thrust. The exhuast valve operating mechanism is similar. The valve cover consists of a cylindrical portion 43 which is situated within the pitch circle of cylinder head retaining bolts 40. Above the cylindrical portion is a further wall portion 34 having a laterally projecting region which supports the shafts 17 and 18. A lid 47 closes the cover.
