Abstract
1368779 Microwave heating apparatus J H A SOULIER 23 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 60129/71 Heading H5H A microwave furnace, for treating sheet materials such as thermoplastic and thermosetting rubbers and resins, comprises a waveguide 1 having a slot 9 in its upper wall of a length corresponding to the width of the sheet 10 conveyed transversely with respect thereto, a metal plate 14 of the same width being placed facing the slot with its edge 14a sloping towards the antenna 2 of the magnetron 3 feeding microwave energy to the waveguide 1. Plate 14 is engaged in an aperture 15 opposite slot 9 and is adjustable in position by one or more screws 16. Plate 14 may comprise several smaller plates 18, 18a ... 18n, Fig. 3 (not shown), of successively decreasing heights, or may have a slope 14b, Fig. 6 (not shown), of exponential shape. The invention gives uniform absorption of microwave energy across the width of sheets 10, which are fed by rollers 11 through a passage defined by the slotted upper wall of the waveguide and a protective metal cover 13. A similar cover 17 is fixed over aperture 15. The adjustable plate 14 may be replaced by a metal part 20 of U-shaped cross-section containing a plate 21 of polytetrafluoroethylene, the parts 20, 21, being separately adjustable by elements 22, 23. Waveguide 1 has an adjustable absorbing load 6, and rings 5 of PTFE providing impedance matching elements.
