Abstract

1368553 Magnetic thread brakes KIJ ROSEN 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 406/73 Heading DID [Also in Division F2] A thread guide roller 3 consisting of two magnetizable soft iron discs 33, 34 is rotatably journaled and axially movable on an axle 4 and a permanent magnet 6 acts to attract the roller 3 so that one side thereof is drawn onto a circular friction surface 5 to decelerate the roller 3 and a thread 2 and wound around it. As shown, the magnet 6 is cylindrical, is surrounded by a coil spring 7 and both magnet 6 and spring 7 are screwed into a bore 8 of a sleeve 9 eccentrically disposed relative to the axle 4 which is located in the centre of friction surface 5: the magnet 6 is lacquered to prevent the coil spring 7 from slipping. The sleeve 9 is mounted in a hole 19 in a tab 17 of a support 14. The support 14 also includes a base plate 15 and a tab 16 which tab 16 mounts a preliminary brake 18 comprising a sphere (25) seated on a seat (26). A thread guide hook 30 is also mounted on the support plate 14. The thread 2 is conducted through the preliminary brake 18, round the roller 3 and about the guide hook 30 and in use frictional forces between the roller 3 and surface 5 decelerate the roller 3 and the thread 2. This braking action can be adjusted by screwing the magnet 6 into and out of bore 8. The roller 3 may be constructed symmetrically and the two side surfaces of discs 33, 34 may have varying degrees of roughness so that a different braking action may be obtained by reversing the roller. The sides of the roller may be coated to reduce the amount of wear or to vary the coefficient of friction, and the coating may be interchangeable.
