Abstract

1367967 Rotary furnaces; heating materials BUSS AG and EISENBAU WYHLEN AG 11 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1330/72 Headings F4B and F4G An arrangement for heating or cooling a rotary drum reactor, e.g. a furnace, calcinator or dryer, comprises a two-part jacket 1, 1<SP>1</SP> surrounding the drum reactor 17 and a plurality of spaced apart annular chambers 2 and 3 circumferentially arranged around the jacket 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. As shown a heat carrier medium, in the form of hot gases heated in a mixing chamber (5, Fig. 1, not shown) fired by a burner (4), is supplied radially or tangentially to every second annular chamber 3 from whence it enters the annular space defined between the reactor and the jacket via circumferentially spaced slots 21, the cooled gases being collected in the remaining annular chambers 2 and returned via an exhaust pipe (25) and a ventilator (6) to the mixing chamber (5) to be reheated. Part of the cooled gas flow may be vented to atmosphere via a throttle member (7, Fig. 1). Control members (18, 19, Fig. 1) are provided to control the flow of heat carrier medium to and from the annular chambers 2, 3. The inlet 8 and outlet (10) of the drum reactor are fixed and are sealed against the rotatable drum through sealing washers (9 and 11), the drum being rotated by means of a ring gear 12 meshing with a driven gear 13.
