1367557 Tow bars incorporating over-run brake actuating means J M BEACH 4 Aug 1972 36532/72 Heading B7T [Also in Division F2] A tow bar comprises telescopically arranged members 18, 28 for connection to towing and towed vehicles respectively by means of ring 20 and plate 30, the tow bar mounting an over-run brake actuating means consisting of an hydraulic device 45 having a cylinder 54 pivotally mounted about bolt 154 on member 28 and a piston-rod 44 pivotally connected by means of bolt 40 to member 18, the limit of movement between the members 18, 28 being determined by a bolt 172 connected to member 28 being movable in a slot 170 formed in member 18, the piston-rod 44 having a piston 46 at its end within cylinder 54 which is formed with a frusto-conical seat 100 for co-operation with a complimentary valve member 102 which throttles fluid passing from one side of the cylinder to the other through passage 78 as the members 18, 28 slide relatively with respect to each other, the valve member when over-run forces caused by the towed vehicle exceed a predetermined level seating against the piston to prevent fluid from being exhausted from chamber 74, the resultant increase in fluid pressure within this chamber being utilized to actuate the towed vehicle brakes. The valve member 102 is located within a bore 140 of the valve stem 44 and is biased to its open position by a spring 120.
