Abstract

1367138 Esters FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 31 Aug 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 40578/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A process for the preparation of a di-ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a diol and/or a low molecular weight oligomer thereof, comprises hydrolysing a dialkyl ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in the absence of a catalyst to form a hydrolysate containing at least 60% but less than 100% of free acid groups, calculated on the total number of free acid and unhydrolysed alkyl ester groups, and reacting the hydrolysate with a diol. The hydrolysis is preferably carried out at 150‹ to 300‹ C. under pressure in an autoclave using water without any additives. The examples describe the potential hydrolysis of dimethyl terephthalate, optionally mixed with dimethyl isophthalate, and the reaction of the hydrolysis product with ethylene glycol.
