Abstract

1445034 Continuous preparation of polyethylene terephthalate MONSANTO CO 25 Jan 1974 03586/74 Heading C3R Polyethylene terephthalate is continuously prepared by subjecting terephthalic acid and excess ethylene glycol in a first stage to apressure of 0À5 p.s.i.g. (0-0À35 kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> gauge) and a temperature of 225-285‹ C. until completion of 75% or more but less than 95% of esterification, then subjecting the resulting low molecular weight polymer and bis-(#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate in a second stage to a pressure higher than that in the first stage and a temperature of 250-300‹ C. until completion of 95-99% of esterification, and polycondensing the resulting polymer to form a high molecular weight polymer having a degree of polymerization of at least 80.
