Abstract

1478561 Unsaturated polyester resins TOYOBO CO Ltd 18 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 6779/75 Heading C3R A process for producing a terephthalicmodified unsaturated polyester resin comprises depolycondensing a polyester of terephthalic acid and a glycol which is free from olefinic unsaturation with a glycol different from that in the polyester to an average degree of polymerization of not more than 2À5 and reacting the product with an unsaturated dicarboxylic reactant, and optionally a saturated dicarboxylic reactant and additional glycol, to give an unsaturated copolyester of Acid No. not above 15 and mixing this with a copolymerizable unsaturated monomer. The process of Specification 1,419,049 wherein the initial polyester is polyester waste and depolycondensation is effected in the presence of a titanium oxalate or tartrate compound is disclaimed. An alkylamine is preferably present during the depolycondensation and a phosphorus compound during the re-esterification. Numerous unsaturated and saturated dicarboxylic acids, glycols, alkylamines and phosphorus compounds are mentioned. The products are stated to have good transparency and storage stability.
