Abstract
1367096 Making a clutch component; extruding JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [5 March 1971] 6218/71 Headings B3A and B3P A roller clutch component including a sleeve 9, Fig. 1, having a stepped bore defining an internally cammed wide portion 10a within a head part 9a of the sleeve and a narrow portion 10b within a shank part 9b of the sleeve is made by cropping a steel bar to produce a slug having a length to diameter ratio greater than 0À75; preferably 1; deforming the slug into a substantially cylindrical billet having a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the head part 9a of the sleeve; heat treating the billet, preferably by a spheroidizing operation, to remove work hardening; forming an axially extending, centrally disposed bore in the billet; positioning the billet in a die 18, Fig. 5, and with a punch 19 impact extruding the billet such that metal flows in the direction of movement of the punch and produces a preform 21 defining the shank part of the sleeve and having a head portion 21a which tapers inwardly, preferably at an angle of 80-100 degrees, to the shank part; heat treating the preform to remove work hardening, preferably by a spheroidizing operation; and using a further punch 25 and die 24, Fig. 6, to perform a reverse impact extrusion process so that the included angle of the tapering head portion of the preform is increased, preferably to 140-170 degrees, to produce the head part of the sleeve. Preferably the sling is reduced in length by at least 30% in the deforming stage and that during the reverse extrusion step a plurality of angularly spaced ribs 28, Fig. 1, integral with the head part are produced. The bore in the billet is formed either by drilling or by an impact extrusion operation followed by a piercing operation. The pierced billet is heat treated by a recrystallization process. A mandrel 22 in the punch 19 is tapered to facilitate its removal from the preform. An example of the steel is carbon 0À21%, manganese 1À24%, silicon 0À3%, sulphur 0À033%, phosphorus 0À06%, nickel 0À13%, chromium 0À23%, molybdenum 0À15% and copper 0À15%, the remainder being iron.
