Abstract
1367073 Tunnel furnaces BRITISH GAS CORP 19 July 1971 [15 May 1970 4 Feb 1971] 23689/70 and 3958/71 Heading F4B A furnace for heating elongate workpieces 2 comprises a magazine 1 to hold the workpieces, arm means 8 for transferring the workpieces from the magazine to a heating tunnel 4, and an ejector mechanism 5 to remove heated workpieces laterally from the tunnel. Locating channels are provided within the heating tunnel to retain removable refractory pieces for adjusting the width of the heating tunnel to accommodate a range of lengths of workpieces. The height of the tunnel may also be varied as required. Gas burner arrangements comprise a number of mixture ports 6 connected to a manifold 7. The control arrangements for the furnace include a thermocouple disc 8 positioned in a recess 9 formed in a refractory block on the upper face of the heating tunnel. In another embodiment, instead of heating the complete length of the workpiece, only a portion may be heated. In order to heat half the length of the workpieces, the manifold 7 may be divided into two compartments of equal length, one compartment being supplied with air to cool the required section of the workpiece, and the other with a gas/air mixture which starts to burn at the exits of the corresponding mixture ports.
