Abstract

1,194,036. Tunnel kilns. GIBBONS BROS. Ltd. 10 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 43154/67. Heading F4B. A tunnel kiln which comprises a central furnace chamber disposed between an elongated pre-heating inlet chamber (see Fig. 3) and an elongated cooling outlet chamber (see Fig. 5) with conveying means 10 extending through all of said chambers, is characterized by the provision of means for passing into said outlet chamber a quantity of cool gas to pass over the work therein so as to cool same and thereby become heated, means for selectively extracting said heated gas from one or more of a plurality of areas within said outlet chamber to control the temperature distribution therein, and means for selectively supplying at least part of said extracted heated gas to one or more of a plurality of areas within the inlet chamber so as to control the temperature distribution therein for preheating the work. As shown, in the cooling zone 19, cool air is fed through ducts 35 in roof sections 22a into cavities 38 extending longitudinally on each side of the tunnel, the air in the cavities 38 being extracted through a plurality of ports 40 in communication with flues 41 in the base 20 of the kiln. The ports 40 are each controlled by an individual damper plate 46. The flues 41 lead to an extraction chamber from which air is extracted by a fan (not shown). The exit end of the outlet chamber through which the cooled ware leaves the kiln is open so that air can flow into the tunnel in counter flow to the ware. The air from the said extraction chamber is passed into flues 49 in the base 20 of the kiln which extend along the latter to a distribution compartment (50, Fig. 2b), four flues (51) extending from the said compartment under the main firing zone (16) to the pre-heating zone. The flues 51 and similar extensions 54 and 59 all communicating with the interior of the inlet chamber, have respective damper plates 57 in order that the amount of air extracted through the flues can be accurately controlled.
