Abstract

1366975 Comminuting garbage BENSON INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 8160'72 Heading B2A Apparatus for comminuting garbage comprises a power-driven rotatable drum 11, Fig. 2, having teeth 57..76 Fig. 6 which intercolate with an anvil 21 including elements 83 and a stripper 170 comprising plates 171 the anvil being pivotable at 81 and swinging out of position in the event of overload due to uncrushable material. Overload is sensed by a device 39. The anvil may alternatively have a translational rather than pivotal motion. The apparatus is started e.g. by the entry of garbage actuating a photo-cell/light beam control device or a flap switch 47. The teeth on the drum are arranged in diametrically-opposed pairs, and comprise steel blocks welded to the drum, or drum and teeth may be an integral casting or be composed of a stack of laminae. The anvil elements 83 comprise triangular plates and cooperate with an hydraulic ram 95 which is set by a relief valve 101 Fig. 14 to yield at a predetermined pressure. Water may be used to dampen garbage entering the machine, e.g. via a chute 5, and deodorising chemical may be added via an injector 106. The stripper plates include abrasive strips 175 Fig. 12, and similar strips 56 Fig. 6 are provided on end plates 54 of the drum 11 serve to grind down any entrained and stubborn material e.g. stockings, string &c. An electrical controller 41 is programmed to initiate an unjamming sequence if the drive motor becomes overloaded. Normally, however, the drum runs at 40-50 feet per minute peripheral tooth speed. Waste from the apparatus may be compacted into blocks e.g. impregnated with concrete, resin or bitumen. In a further system soft material is reduced to a slurry and the heavy and metal objects are delivered to a bag-packaging apparatus (163) Fig. 20 not shown.
