Abstract

1366786 Reciprocating pumps UNIVERSITE DE SHERBROOKE 2 Nov 1972 [15 May 1972] 50611/72 Heading F1A A pump, e.g. for analytical use, comprises at least two pumping cells each comprising a hollow piston 31, e.g. of P.T.F.E. tubing, either U-shaped, as shown, or straight, Fig. 1 (not shown) each end of the piston being reciprocable in a respective cylinder 33, 34, and members 40, 41 carrying the cylinders and the pistons, as shown, or both formed with cylinders, Fig. 1 (not shown) being rotated in unison about respective inclined axes to cause relative reciprocation of the pistons and cylinders, valve means being provided to open one cylinder to inlet during the suction stroke and the other cylinder to outlet during the discharge stroke. As shown, the valve means comprise kidney ports 51, 52 in a stationary valve plate. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) members 40 and 41 both have valve plates, cylinders and a plurality of U-shaped pistons. The angle between members 40 and 41 is adjustable to vary the displacement. Members 40 and 41 may each comprise two parts, a cylinder block and a guide member, connected together for rotation. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the valve plates are biased against the cylinder members by air-pressure, sealing between the plates and members being effected by O-rings, a gasket or by highly polishing the contact surfaces. In Fig. 6 (not shown) two pump assemblies (320), (321) are arranged side-by-side in a frame with a screw arrangement (381) for simultaneously reducing the stroke of one assembly and increasing the stroke of the other. The two cylinder members of each pump assembly are connected to rotate together by tension springs (301), one member of one assembly being driven by a motor (360), and a chain (375) transmitting drive to the corresponding member of the other assembly.
