Abstract
1366510 Active carbon microspheres; purifying water KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 17 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 43558/71 Headings C1A and C1C Active hollow carbon microspheres are made from hollow carbon microspheres, see Specification 1,318,324, by heating at a temperature of from 400‹ to 1000‹ C. in an atmosphere of air, steam or carbon dioxide. The microspheres have preferably the following dimensions, particle size 5-1000 Á, wall thickness 0À5 to 50 Á, and bulk density 0À05 to 0À4. The spheres may be used as a catalyst or in purifying contaminated water. Purifying water.-Purification is effected by flowing the water to be purified downwardly through a column whilst maintaining the active microspheres as a floating layer upon a body of supported water, removing spent spheres from the top of the column and introducing fresh active spheres at the bottom of the column. As shown in the Figure, waster water to be cleaned is introduced through inlet (A), and via spray device (C) supplied as droplets to floating layer (F) of active microspheres. The cleansed water leaves the column by pipe (K). Fresh microspheres are supplied to the bottom of the column by tube (H) and distributer (G). The deactivated microspheres are removed by skimmer (B) rotating in pit (D) and tube (E). The liquid level is adjusted by tube (I). The Specification also includes a flow diagram (not shown) of a continuous water purification process including regeneration of the deactivated microspheres utilizing treatment conditions similar to the conditions used in their initial formation.
