Abstract

Spherical carbon particles are produced by decomposing a gaseous suspension of liquified finely-divided carbon-rich material composed of carbohydrates, pitches, or resinous materials; when the starting material is solid it has a particle size of 20-500 microns and when liquid a droplet diameter of 50-200 microns. The material may be treated for 5-30 seconds at a temperature of 800 DEG -1200 DEG F. In the apparatus shown, a saturated aqueous solution of molasses is sprayed through nozzle 7 into a stream of hot flue gas, nitrogen, or steam, introduced at 1; carbon microspheres are separated in cyclone 11 and collected at 15; <PICT:0699470/III/1> when powdered carbohydrate is used it is introduced from hopper 17. In another example powdered cane sugar is blown into the top of a heated quartz tube. Other suitable starting materials are hydrolyzed starch, petroleum and coal tar pitches, and resin. The carbon particles may be activated with steam or carbon dioxide, and are useful as heat transfer media, for contacting fluids, as adsorbents for the desulphurization of gases or the removal of unsaturated hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon mixtures, or as catalysts or catalyst carriers in fixed bed or fluidized processes, e.g. the cracking of hydrocarbon oils.
