1366486 Gas discharge display tubes SONY CORP 17 March 1972 [20 March 1971] 12736/72 Heading H1D In an indicator display tube which includes a plurality of similar indicator units each composed of cathodes 61, 62 ... 68 and interconnected anodes 51 and 52, all the electrodes being arranged in a common plane within a common envelope 2, 3 and corresponding cathodes of all the units being interconnected, the ratio of t, Fig. 13-i.e. the depth of the gasfilled envelope-to L, Fig. 12-i.e. the maximum dimension of an indicator unit in the plane in which it lies-is arranged to lie in the range 0À05 to 0À40, whereby, when different sets of cathodes corresponding to a desired display are successively energized while the anodes of successive display units are energized in sequence, diffusion of ions between adjacent indicator units is reduced sufficiently to prevent incorrect display due to the production of glow discharge at non-energized cathodes. The envelope is of glass or ceramic, leads for the electrodes being printed on the base 2 before being covered with an insulating coating provided with openings at each end of each lead, the cathodes and anodes being printed on to this layer and making contact with their corresponding levels through the openings. The electrodes are electrolytically plated with nickel to reduce sputtering. Reference is made to the optional use of positively biased barrier electrodes (100, Fig. 9, not shown) disposed around and between the indicator units, for further reducing ionic diffusion.
