Abstract

1366131 Stretching carbon fibres COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 17 Dec 1971 [8 Jan 1971] 1051/71 Addition to 1315940 Heading C1A Carbon fibres, filaments or films formed by spinning or extruding a solution or extract of coal or a chemically modified solution or extract of coal, after stabilization and carbonization are stretched axially at a temperature of at least 1200‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The stretching apparatus comprises a quartz tube 1, sealed by plate 2 containing a central aperture covered by a cap 3 containing a hook 4 located over the aperture. The lower end of tube 1 is sealed by a plate 5, centrally apertured and aligned therefrom a tubular member 6 which carries a steel rod 7 which passes through an end cap 8. The steel rod 7 is provided with means (not shown) for applying a downwardly exerting force. Inside tube 1 is a cylindrical carbon susceptor 9 mounted on a stand 10 and an R.F. coil 11 surrounding the tube. In use a tow of carbon fibres 12 is attached to hook 4 and to steel rod 7 at 13, heated by radiation from 9, and stretched by the force applied to 7.
