Abstract
1365772 Measuring "toe-in" of vehicle wheels POLYPRODUKTE A G 13 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 32696/72 Heading G1N "Toe-in" of front wheels of a motor vehicle is measured by engaging pivotted feeler bars 36, 37 with the wheel rims, the angular position of each bar being converted to an electric signal in a differential transformer 47, the core 48 of which is displaceable by either of two pins 41, 40 selectable by pneumatic couplings 44, 45 to sense the position of the feeler bar, pin 41 being twice as far from pivot 38 as is pin 40. Two measurements are taken, the wheels being turned through 180 degrees by rollers 25-28 between measurements, the core 48 being moved by pin 41 during the first measurement and by pin 40 during the second, thereby eliminating wheel wobble errors. Feelers 20, 21 engage the rear wheels to align the measuring apparatus with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The distance between the front and rear wheel feelers is telescopically adjustable. The front wheel rim feelers are moved in and out symmetrically by a common pinion 24 engaging respective racks 22, 23. The spacing of the rear feelers is similarly adjustable.
