Abstract

1367603 Measuring wheel alignment O BEISSBARTH 2 Feb 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 5315/73 Heading G1N and G1X The angular attitude of a vehicle wheel is determined by an arrangement comprising a platform 2 movably mounted on a stand 1, the platform 2 having rotatable rollers 3, 4 mounted thereon which rotate the wheel. A sensing element 11 comprising horizontally disposed rollers 13, 14 is mounted on the platform 2 being movable by piston 17 so that rollers 13, 14 abut the wheel. Any misalignment, i.e. toe-in or toe-out, of the wheel causes the platform 2 to rotate until both rollers 13, 14 engage the wheel. The angle traversed is measured, preferably by means of rotary potentiometer 41. A third roller 19 may be provided on the sensing element 11 which is horizontally pivotable about the axis of rollers 13, 14 so that rollers 13, 14, 19 may engage the wheel simultaneously, the inclination of the wheel being determined by means of a second rotary potentiometer 51. A second element 21 may be provided, the movement of the piston 17 being transferred by a cable 30 to the element 21 to bring rollers 13, 14, 19, 23, 24 simultaneously into wheel abutment thereby eliminating lateral displacement of the wheel. The potentiometer 41 is mounted within guides (not shown) so that it may follow any lateral displacement of the platform 2 and maintain its constant angular position with respect to stand 1 and remain in mesh with gear wheel 43. The platform 2 may be brought back to its zero position by means of cables and a ram Fig. 3 (not shown). By electrical processing of the outputs obtained from the potentiometers associated with all four vehicle wheels, the mean values of the parameters, together with the variations thereof, may be found giving a measure of toe-in, camber, castor angle and king-pin inclination.
