Abstract

1532417 Measuring friction B A G LONNROTH 26 Nov 1975 [27 Nov 1974 25 Feb 1975] 48685/75 Heading G1S [Also in Division B7] A trailer 15, Figs. 3, 4, used for measuring the friction between its wheels and the road surface, has a draw bar 16 and wheels which may be moved into a toe-in (as shown) or toe-out position from a normal transport position with (+)ve or (-)ve camber as in Fig. 5 (not shown). The wheels are mounted for rotation on journals 7, 8 inclined from an axle 6 so that in the wheel position shown in Fig. 4 the wheels scuff when the trailer is pulled along and the axle 6 is rotated in its bearings 9, 10 to turn a lever 12 and operate a dynamometer 13 indicating torque. The torque so measured is related to the coefficient of friction between the wheels and the road. The trailer may be provided with two parallel axles each with one wheel journal and two measuring devices may be used. It is also possible for only one wheel or four wheels to be used. In Fig. 6 (not shown) a piston and cylinder (20) is used to movably adjust the dynamometer 13.
