Abstract

1415392 Determining rotational plane of a wobbling wheel HUNTER ENG CO 31 Jan 1973 [17 March 1972] 4972/73 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining the true plane of rotation of a wobbling wheel comprises means for measuring the angle between the plane of the wheel and the vertical at two positions of the wheel which are 180 degrees apart, from which the true plane of rotation can be obtained. As shown, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a frame 13, mounted on the wheel rim 14 by clamping between pins 15, 17, carries a plate 23 which is fixed to the wheel axle 22 and has two apertures 24, 25 on one side and a third aperture 26 diametrically opposite. An extension of the axle 22 carries a housing 27 which is hanging vertically on the axle, and carries a first switch 34 at the same radius as aperture 25 and a second switch 33 at the same radius as apertures 24, 26. The wheel 12 carries a sensor 35 which measures the angle between the plane of the wheel and the vertical. The wheel is rotated so that a signal from sensor 35 is fed to a first memory unit, when both switches 33, 34 are operated when they are opposite apertures 24, 25, and to a second memory unit after a further 180 degrees rotation of the wheel, when switch 33 is opposite aperture 26. The two signals are added and halved to give a value representing the angle between the true plane of rotation of the wheel and the vertical, i.e. the angle between the wheel axle and the horizontal, i.e. the wheel camber. By measuring the angle between the plane of the wheel and the horizontal the toe-in or toe-out of the wheel can be determined by the same apparatus.
