Abstract

1365712 Making pierce nuts; jointing by forging; punching and shearing K SHINJO 9 Nov 1971 [19 Dec 1970] 52077/71 Headings B3A B3H and B3W A method of producing pierce nuts comprises shaping a metal strip 10 by pressing opposite edges of a first surface 22 to form depressions 18 along the edges, pressing side surfaces of the strip to form grooves 21 along the deressions, punching holes 24 in the metal strip and cutting the strip into nut-blanks. Pressing face 11 1 of upper press tool 11 applies pressure to the top surface of the strip to cause bulging of the strip edges, too much flow being prevented by sides 11 2 of the press tool and thus shaping edges 17 and flanges 16. Side press tools 12 engage dedepressions 18 and depress them to provide shaped grooves 21 and also to produce shoulders 23. A punch 13 then forms holes 24 at equal intervals along the centre of body 15 after which blanks 25 are formed by cutting the strip between shearing blades 14 1 , 14 2 . The holes of individual blanks are then tapped to provide screw threads 26.
