Abstract

1365391 Making cutting dies SAMCO STRONG Ltd 24 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971 4 Jan 1972] 3064/71 and 206/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division B4] A cutting die suitable for use in press cutting workpieces from sheet material, e.g. fabric as in plastics, the die comprising a cutting edge made from hardened wire of circular cross-section. The die is made by forming a piece of wire piano-wire to the desired shape of the article to be cut out, placing the shaped wire between a base-plate, e.g. of mild steel, and a layer of polyurethane foam plastics having a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive; the "sandwich" is then placed between the upper and lower platens of a press thereby applying pressure so to cause the wire to cut through the foam plastics, the latter becoming adhesively secured to the base-plate. The wire is also secured by the adhesive, alternatively, the wire may be secured to the base-plate by soldering, or by fine wire threaded through holes formed in the base-plate. In use, the die is placed between the platens together with the material to be cut, and pressure applied by the platens so as to cause the wire to cut out the shaped portion from the material; the stroke of the press is set by means of spacers between the platens or adjustable toggle means on the press. The compressed. foam on the die serves to eject the cut-out portion from the sheet material.
