Abstract
1365363 Acrylate polymers B F GOODRICH CO 10 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 42309/71 Headings C3P and C3G An acrylate polymer is prepared by emulsion polymerization of an acrylic ester having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and which is present in such an amount that the resulting acrylate polymer contains 35 to 99À95% by weight of bound acrylic ester, there being added to the polymerization, at any stage, a vinyl or vinylidene halide monomer having the formula wherein X is chlorine or fluorine and Y is hydrogen or a halogen the same as defined for X in such an amount that the resulting acrylate polymer contains 0À05 to 4À9% by weight of bound vinyl or vinylidene halide. In the examples n-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, N- methylol acrylamide, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, and glycidyl methacrylate are copolymerized in the presence of water, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium lauryl sulphate, potassium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite, ammonium carbonate and ammonium persulphate. In Example VI a graft copolymer is formed by adding vinyl chloride after the other monomers. In Example VII the polymer latex is coated on flat paper and glass plate, dried and cured.
