Abstract

1,254,267. Graft polymerization process. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 9 March, 1970 [17 April 1969 (3)], No. 11227/70. Addition to 1,208,345. Heading C3G. A monomer comprising (a) at least 50% by weight of methyl methacrylate, (b) up to 50% of an alkyl acrylate or vinyl acetate and (c) up to 20% of another comonomer is polymerized in the presence of a copolymer of (1) 50 to 95% by weight of ethylene, (2) 50 to 5% of vinyl acetate, aC 1 to C 18 -alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and (3) up to 20% of another comonomer and a free radical catalyst and in the absence of water, the polymerizatiori being carried out in two stages, in the second of which additional catalyst and monomer are added. In one embodiment, the ethylene copolymer is cross-linked prior to the interpolymerization and in another embodiment the interpolymer produced is cross-linked. In examples, monomer (b) is ,selected from ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, stearyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate and methyl acrylate, optional monomer (c) is selected from acrylic acid, stearyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile and the copolymer is of (1) ethylene, (2) vinyl acetate, stearyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, lauryl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, stearyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, . methyl acrylate, stearyl acrylate and (3) optional monomer acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, alpha-methyl styrene, acrylamide, vinylidene chloride or methyl crotonate.
