Abstract
1364751 Skid brakes T A JOHNSON 24 Jan 1972 3304/72 Heading F2E A vehicle is braked by means of a pair of flexible mat skid members 28 guided downwardly into the path of each rear wheel, each skid member being guided by means 24 defining a path for the member, and means which prevents the member from being released from the guide means during braking. Each guide means 24 is pivoted on a transverse shaft 38 supported from the vehicle 12 and has shock absorbers 50. Each mat 28 comprises an inner layer 64 and outer layers 66, 68 of rubber laminated thereto, or completely of reinforced rubber, of chain steel, or of rubber lined internally with steel. The layers are held by plates and the release preventing means comprises an enlarged upper end 34 having resilient buffer strips 36 which could alternatively be on the lower end of the guide means 24, which has a restricted aperture. The mat 28 is retained by a spring loaded pawl 58, released by a chain 80 from a pedal, when the mat is used as a supplementary brake, which travels beyond a certain position corresponding to the braking position for the main brakes. Alternatively, the mat 28 is actuated by a spring released pawl which is held by a lever in a peripheral groove, the lever being solenoid-operated. This is used where a vehicle has a plurality of axles having such brake mats 28, the mats being released in succession from the rearmost axle, forwardly. The solenoids are actuated in succession by a circuit which has a coil and an armature with segments closing secondary circuits for each solenoid, the segments being designed so that they close the circuits in succession. Alternatively the circuit comprises a switch for one solenoid which energizes a coil which in turn controls a successive switch for the next coil, this being repeated for the successive solenoids.
