Abstract

388,059. Vehicle sanding-apparatus. BUTLER, W. J., 67, Sefton Avenue, Mill Hill, and TIPPER, W. R., 385, Rotherhithe New Road, both in London. Aug. 11, 1931, Nos. 22660 and 29487. [Class 103 (iii).] In sanding and like appliances for vehicles, sand or the like is directed through shoots from a sand reservoir in predetermined quantities on to or in front of some or all of the vehicle wheels by means of feeding-devices operated by, or independently of, the brake pedal, or handbrake lever, or both, the feeding-devices being left after braking in a condition to deliver a further quantity of sand when the brake is next applied. The feeding-device, Fig. 3, comprises an upper shutter f normally open and a lower shutter h normally closed, the shutters being operated by levers m, n, o, k connected by a spring t and a slotted link p. The threearmed lever m, n, o is connected through a rod u to an operating-lever v, Fig. 5, having a projection x that may be swung into the path of the brake-pedal y or lever, and may be held in its two positions by a fixed spring 4 engaging recesses 6 in its surface. In operation a pull on the rod u opens the shutter h and, after some sand is ejected, the shutter f gradually closes under the action of the spring t. Sanding- devices on opposite wheels may be operated simultaneously by the rod u of each device being connected to one end of a cross-shaft 10, Fig. 2, connected to the lever v by a rod 7. Modified forms of shutter feeding-devices and operating means are described differing only in constructional details from the above. In one form for preventing operation of the sanding- devices when the brake is applied, a forked lever 47, Fig. 11, may be moved to engage a projection on a rod 45 operatively connected to a feeding-device and spring-connected to the brake-rod 43. In a modification in which the shutters are operated by a cable, both shutters may be retained partially open to allow a small stream of sand to be ejected whilst, for example, the vehicle is ascending or descending a hill. In another form the feeding-devices comprise rotatable drums 27, Fig. 9, each having compartments 28 for transferring sand from a reservoir 24, Fig. 7, to shoots 29. The drums are rigidly mounted on a shaft 31 journalled in housings 26 fixed to the reservoir, the shaft 31 being connected by flexible couplings at its ends to friction wheels 33 mounted on the ends of a shaft 35 which, when rotated positively or by a spring under the control of the lever v, Fig. 5, forces the wheels 33 into contact with the road wheels 6, thus rotating the drums to deliver sand. The shaft 31 may be rigid throughout its length and an idle roller may be interposed between each wheel 33 and its road wheel.
