Abstract

1364567 Seal for aircraft wing root UNIROYAL AG 27 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 44885/71 Headings B7G and B7W A seal for filling the space between an aircraft fuselage and a wing movable relative thereto, comprises a base-plate 7 to which a plurality of elastic airtight sealing cells 13 are attached and feed means supplying compressed air to the cells, each cell having opposite sidewalls 20, 21 of triangular shape, the bottom apex of which is flattened in use as shown at 18a, and endwalls 14, 22 extending between the sidewalls. The base-plate 7 is secured by rivets 26, 28 to flanges 23, 24 of the cells, adjacent flanges 23 of adjacent cells overlapping and spacing the respective sidewalk 20, 21 near the baseplate 7 which is formed with apertures 9 communicating the cells 13 with a common channel 10 formed with a conduit 12 adapted to be connected to a source of compressed air to inflate the cells. In use the area 19 of each sidewall contacts a corresponding area of a neighbouring cell. Several or all sealing cells 13 share a jacket 34a secured together with the cells by rivets 28a and a bar 30 to the base-plate 7. In use the endwalls 14 of the cells 13 form a continuation of the surface of an aircraft fuselage and the apex is flattened by a wing 2 which has variable pitch and sweep. The internal surface of each endwall 14 may be reinforced to increase its stiffness. In case of leakage from an individual cell valves are provided which maintain pressure in the remaining cells.
