Abstract
767,338. Aircraft air brakes. COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. Aug. 26, 1954 [Sept. 7, 1953], No. 24883/54. Class 4. Drag producing means comprises a plurality of curved members arranged substantially parallel to each other and spaced at intervals so as to form passages between them so that fluid flowing relatively to a body to which the means is attached, is deflected through a considerable angle. The angle may be less than, equal to, or greater than a right angle, the former case being shown in Fig. 5, where a plurality of curved members 31 are mounted between parallel plates so that their leading portions are substantially parallel to the direction of undeflected flow, the whole forming an aircraft dive brake at the trailing edge of a wing section, the brake being movable to a position inside the wing section of comparatively low drag. In Fig. 11, two members 38 are movable from the position shown to one inside the wing. Alternatively, the members may be pivoted forwardly for movement from and to the drag producing position or may have a sliding movement. Some of the curved members 31 nearest to the wing may be removed, or replaced by a flat plate. In Fig. 18, a plan view is given of a plurality of members 31 upstanding from the trailing edge of a wing, and similarly disposed beneath, so as to deflect the air to a spanwise direction.
