1364552 Indexing WERKZEUGMASCHINENKOMBINAT 7 OKTOBER BERLIN VEB 3 Sept 1971 41138/71 Heading B3B A mechanism for indexing the spindle drum 10 of an automatic multiple spindle lathe, comprises a spindle drum motor, a control member movable in two opposite directions, a control mechanism for moving the control member in one direction from a predetermined position and which is driven indpendently of the spindle drum motor, means sensitive to the displacement of the control member from the predetermined position in said one direction and responsive to such displacement to control the spindle drum motor such that it drives the spindle drum in a given direction of rotation and its speed of rotation at any time depends on the magnitude of the displacement of the control member from the predetermined position at that time, and means linking the spindle drum and the control member and operative to move the control member back towards the predetermined position as the spindle drum is turned by the motor in the given direction. As shown, the control mechanism includes a Geneva wheel 2 driven by a control motor 1 through gears 15, the resulting incremental motion of shaft 3 causes internally screw threaded part 5 of the control member to be moved axially by its engagement with screwed member 4 on shaft 3. This movement is detected by hydraulic valve 8 through linkage 6 and this controls the flow of fluid to hydraulic spindle drum motor 9. Rotation of drum 10 is fed back via sliding gear block 12 to member 14 splined to member 5 which then rotates back along member 4 to its initial position. Indexing may be carried out in either direction of rotation. The indexing ratio may be adjusted by selection of gears in block 12.
