Abstract

1426244 Machine carriage control USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 9 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11489/73 Heading B3E A drive control for a carriage 14, Fig. 1, of a machine for propelling the carriage in either of -two directions comprises a rotatable shaft 100, a centering cam 101, Fig. 5, rotatable by the shaft having two symmetrically arranged shoulders 102, biasing devices 106 bearing against each of the shoulders to maintain the cam and shaft in a predetermined position when the control is inoperative, a device for rotating the shaft in both directions from the predetermined position, devices 116, 117, Fig. 3, operable by rotation of the shaft in one direction to cause movement of the carriage in that direction, and a device responsive to the extent of rotation of the shaft in either direction to vary speed of movement of the carriage. The machine e.g. a rail manipulator for a gag press, comprises a base 10, rails 12, a manipulator head 24, and a reversible hydraulic motor 15 for propelling the carriage along the rails. A bevel gear 112 is fixed to the end of shaft 100 and engages a bevel gear 113 fixed to a shaft 114 carrying cams 116, 117 and a lever 119. The cams control microswitches 120, 121 for controlling the direction of movement of the carriage. The lever 119 is connected to a cable 124, via a clevis 123, to operate a servo valve 125 for controlling the speed of the carriage. Movement of a lever on the shaft 100 causes rotation of the shaft and subsequent rotation of bevel gears 112, 113 and shaft 114. The amount of rotation of shaft 114 controls the opening of the servo valve and hence the carriage speed. When the lever is released, springs in.a housing 107, associated with spring- loaded plungers 106, cause the latter to return to their equilibrium position and rotation of the shaft 114 ceases and the carriage stops.
