Abstract

1364278 Polyamide-imide coatings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 Sept 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 45207/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Polamide-imides useful for high temperature insulation and coating applications are the reaction product of (e) the reaction product of (i) an anhydride optionally mixed with some dicarboxylic acid a dianhydride, with (ii) a polyamine R'(NH 2 ) n where R and R<SP>1</SP> are organic radicals and n is at least 2, with (b) an anhydride where R" is an aliphatically unsaturated organic radical. The products may be cured by heating or copolymerised with another unsaturated monomer, e.g. diallylisophthalate. Numerous examples of each reactant and of solvents are given; in specific Examples (a) (i) is trimellitic anhydride, (a) (ii) is (167) diaminodiphneyl methane or (8) diaminodiphenyl sulphone; (b) is (1,2 and 5 to 8) maleic, (3) endocis-5 norbomane-2,3-, or (4) tetrahydrophthalic anhydride; and (c) is (1 to 5,7 and 8), 2,4- tolylene diisocyanate or (6) p,p'-diphenyl- methane diisocyanate. In Ex. 2 the product is copolymerised with diallylphthalate. The products are used (Exs 1 and 5) as top coats on polyamide-imide or polyester-imide coated magnet wire; and (3 to 5, 7 and 8) to coat metal panels, e.g. by dipping stainless steel or aluminium.
