Abstract
1364241 Insulant for pipelines and pipeline; insulated therewith INDUSTRIELE ONDER NEMING WAVIN NV 11 Aug 1971 [11 May 1970] 22726/70 Heading F2P A tubular heat insulating unit for fitting over a pipeline while the pipeline is being laid com prising a hollow cylinder 16 of heat insulating material and an outer envelope 17 of non metallic fluid impervious material, the outer envelope having at one end a aocket-like portion 19 which extends beyond the hollow cylinder, whereby the unit may be joined to a further similar unit with the socket like portion overlapping the other end of the outer envelope of the further similar unit to form a fluid impervious seal therewith. As shown in Fig. 1, the outer envelope 17 extends inwardly at 34 to cover the end surface of the insulant and is then formed into an axial spigot 19 which is accommodated in a widened bore 21 of the insulant of a further unit. An insulant 23 (e.g. mica) may be inserted between the spigot 19 on the pipeline. Stiffeners 24, 22 may be provided and a rubber seal 25 may be compressed by wires 26. The inner diameter of the insulant 16 may be spaced from the pipeline by spacers 28, the annular space 27 being filled with dry air, or elastomeric or shrinkable plastics material. Alternatively the insulant may be a tight sliding fit on the pipe and may be adhered thereto. In a method of laying an insulated pipeline a number of pipes are placed in end-to-end relation, adjacent pipes are interconnected, a portion of the pipeline so formed is raised, an insulating unit (as defined above) is slid on to and secured to the pipeline, a further successive such units are slid on to the pipeline and are each secured to the preceding unit in a fluid impervious manner, and the pipeline is lowered after all the units have been positioned and secured. Materials.-The insulant 16 may be of polyurethane foam or rock wool and the cover 17 is of fluid impervious elastomeric material (e.g. polythene). The pipes 11, 12 are described as of steel and the stiffeners 22, 24 may be of fibre reinforced plastics.
