Abstract
1363578 Centrifugal straining of wort ALFA LAVAL AB 5 April 1972 [6 April 1971] 15722/72 Heading BID [Also in Divisions A2 C3 and C6] A proteinaceous sediment is recovered from the spent grains left after mashing a ground or puverised carbohydrate-containing raw material, e.g. corn pulverised to -500Á particle size to produce wert, by passing a suspension of the spent grains in wort or water through three centrifugal sieves which are connected in series and each comprises two rotating conical sieve members having hole sizes of 100-200Á and 20-50Á, respectively, the sieve members being arranged so that the suspension is first passed through the sieve member with the larger hole size and threafter the sieve with the smaller hole size, and centrifuging the supension issuing from the last sieve, using a centrifuge with intermittent sludge discharge, to obtain a sediment rich in protein composed of particles with a size of 3-50Á. The sediment may then be dried in a fluidized bed.
