Abstract

1363380 Pipe joint seals WEGNER & CO and H MARKS 13 April 1972 17040/72 Headings F2P and F2G The joint between pipes 1, 3 is internally sealed by a resilient sleeve 5 having axially separated annular sealing surfaces 6. Cavities 8 are disposed radially inwardly from surfaces 6 and communicate with the base of the sleeve via ports 10 and with the respective ends of the sleeve via ports 11. Annular slits 7 are incorporated into the sealing surfaces 6. In use, the cavities 8 bear annular reinforcements 9 and are filled with an expanding cement via ports 10. A pipe 14 bearing collars 15 is inserted in the sleeve and the collars are inflated with compressed air to bear on the inside of the sleeve inwardly of the sealing surfaces 6. Excess cement is extruded via ports 11. The expanding nature of the cement ensures even sealing of surfaces 6 against distorted or damaged pipe walls. After deflation of the collars 15 the pipe 14 and collars are removed. The expanding cement may be a plastics material which is expanded on setting by a foaming agent. The seal is suitable for circular or oval pipes. The pipe 14 bearing collars 15 is of similar cross section to the joint being sealed.
