1363299 Quaternary ammonium compounds BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 25 Nov 1971 [26 Nov 1970] 54719/71 Heading C2C Quaternary ammonium compounds are produced by reacting an aziridine having the Formula (I) in which R<SP>1</SP> denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and A denotes a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical, in the presence of an acid or, but only when A denotes a hydrogen atom, in the presence of an acylating agent other than an acid, with a tertiary amine having the Formula (II) in which R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are identical or different and each denotes an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical which is unsubstituted or bears one or more lipophilic groups which are inert under the reaction conditions as substituents or, but only in the case of reaction in the presence of an acid, may as an additional possibility bear one or more hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups, the acid being present in the form of a salt with the tertiary amine with or without free acid. The products are of formula in which X is an equivalent of an acid radical derived from the acid or acylating agent used, and may form part of A, the compound then being a betaine. Products of this formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, R<SP>2</SP> is methyl or methylol, R<SP>3</SP> is methyl, benzyl or phenyl and A is acetyl, benzoyl, p-toluenesulphonyl, dimethylcarbamoyl, a hemiester radical of carbonic acid, or (together with X-) succinoyl, are claimed as novel. Suitable acylating agents are halides and anhydrides of carboxylic, carbamic and sulphonic acids and carbonic acid. Suitable acids for use in the process are inorganic, aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids, omega-omega<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, and carbonic acid (introduced as CO 2 ). Solvents may be used. The quaternary ammonium compounds are used as starting materials for the production of antistatic agents in the textile industry, as cationic modifying agents for aminoplasts and as dyeing auxiliaries. Compounds with a long alkyl chain are antistatic agents for synthetic fibres and cationic emulsifiers or wetting agents.
