Abstract

1362595 Universal joint; bearings L F SCHMID 29 Nov 1971 [29 April 1971] 55351/71 Headings F2U and F2A A shaft 16 (e.g. in a vehicle transmission between a driving axle differential and either a wheel or a gearbox) has at each end a universal joint comprising a transverse pin 5, 12, parallel to the pin at the other end, rotatably mounting a pair of rollers, axially displaceable along a pair of diametrically opposite grooves 7 in an outer coupling member. The rollers may be mounted on the pins 5, 12 by roller bearings 9 having a track width 25 on the pin greater than that 24 on the roller. The ends of the shaft 16 may have resilient (e.g. polyurethane) members 10 to limit axial movement of the shaft. The roller bearings may have their track widths 24, 26 of contact with the rollers and the pins 5, 12 such that the Hertz bearing stresses on the two tracks are similar. Also the two tracks may be offset (c.f. 39 and 40) along the bearing axis.
