Abstract

1362387 Stopping articles during transit on conveyers BENDIX CORP 2 Aug 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 36284/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division F2] A conveyer 16, 18, carries workpieces 34 on pallets 32 past a series of work stations 12, each of which includes operating means for performing operations on the workpiece, at least one of the operating means including cam means 40 having a plurality of cam surfaces 60, 62, 64, 66, and 68, arranged relative to each other in a series extending transversely to the path of the conveyer. The conveyer comprises roller chains 16, 18 (Fig. 2). Cam 60 drives a carriage 170 via a linkage 86 to feed bearings or seals 160 from a positioning device 118 operated by the cam 62, to a press member operated by linkage 120 driven by the cam 68. The cam 64 operates a member 114 which serves to locate the pallet 32 being dealt with at the station 12 under consideration. The cam 66 operates (via a link 92) an auxiliary clamp for the pallet. A resilient link 178 which also has a predetermined degree of lost motion in one of its directions of travel, allows for the carriage 170 to be positioned precisely between pairs of rigid stops 188, 190; and 192, 194, at respective ends of its travel. Each linkage, such as the link 90 connecting the cam 64 and the member 114 may include an overload device at its pivot 100. This comprises a housing 122 carried by a fixed frame member, a pivot member 128 rigid with the link 90, and a ball valve 124 which is urged by a spring 126 to normally close an air port 150. On overload of the arm 90, resultant camming action on the ball 124 causes venting of air from a pressure source 146. Consequent pressure drop acts on a pressure switch 152 to apply a brake 46 and clutch 45 in the drive to the cam drum 40.
