Abstract

866,030. Rotary conveyers; hopper discharges. KELSEY-HAYES CO. March 11, 1958 [April 8, 1957], No. 7873/58. Class 78 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A machine for securing together a wheel hub and brake drum assembly A and assembling bearing cups 111, 112, Fig. 3, therewith, comprises spaced stations 105-108, Fig. 1, mechanism for assembling the bearing cups with the hub and drum assembly at one station 106, mechanism for assembling together a hub and drum assembly by inserting studs therein at another station 107, and means for moving the assembly intermittently between the stations. The assembly comprises a cast brake drum 40, Fig. 3, with a sheet metal back 42 cast therein, and a hub 56. Five holes 58 in the hub register with corresponding holes 55 in the back. At station 105, Fig. 1, an assembly is loaded manually on one of six supports 4 carried on a horizontal turntable 2 rotated intermittently through 60 degrees by a Geneva mechanism 5, Fig. 30 (not shown). The assembly is located on its support 4 by spring-biased pins 60, Fig. 3, engaging in the holes 55, 58 and by two further spring-biased pins 45 engaging in further holes 44. At station 106 an upper bearing cup 111 supplied through a shoot 120 to a supporting member 118 and located therein by spring- loaded pivoted fingers 124, Fig. 4 (not shown), is pressed by an hydraulically-operated plunger 117 into a recess 141 of the hub. Thereafter a second hydraulically operated plunger 150 collects a lower bearing cup 112 from a support member 170 and presses it into another recess 1671 of the hub. The bearing cups such as 111, Fig. 7, are extracted from hoppers 190 by fingers 203 on an endless chain 194 which deliver correctly oriented cups 111 along a track 215 and into a shoot 211 communicating with the shoot 120, Fig. 3, or with a lower shoot 168. Incorrectly oriented cups 211 are removed from the fingers by a cam plate 192. At station 107 Fig. 1, five studs 70, Fig. 10, are pressed simultaneously into the holes 58, 55 of the assembly by stud inserting devices 226 actuated by hydraulic motors 253, 254, Fig. 13 (not shown). The studs 70 have knurled portions 74 which are a force fit in the holes 58 and portions 73 which are staked over the lower edge of the holes 55 by means of radial recesses 75, Fig. 11 (not shown), in supporting bushes 82. Separate shoots 235 convey the studs to the devices 226 and are supplied by gravity through ducts 330 fed from a single shoot 301, Fig. 19, by a separating mechanism 300 having a reciprocating slide 308 actuated by a double-acting pneumatic motor 360, Fig. 22 (not shown). The slide has five slots which receive studs successively from shoot 301, and discharge them simultaneously into the shoots 330. A sliding gate 316 and a pivoted gate 340 are provided respectively for the shoot 301 and the shoots 330. At station 108, Fig. 1, the completed assembly A is ejected from its support 4 by an hydraulically actuated plunger 495, Fig. 29 (not shown), and is removed by an unloading mechanism 409, Fig. 24, comprising a pair of arms 410 pivoted .at 413 to a carriage 403 movable between stops 425, 426 along a horizontal track. The arms are first raised through more than 90 degrees to lift the assembly and deposit it on a flat table 423 and then the trolley is moved to the right to push the assembly on a sloping portion 424 of the table where it falls by gravity on to a conveyer. The arms 410 and carriage 403 are actuated by an hydraulic motor 430 through rocker arm 437, pivoted at 439 and linkage 445. An electrical automatic-control system, Figs. 31, 32 (not shown), is described and includes limit switches to prevent faulty operation.
