Abstract

1362308 Sabot projectiles WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIKOERLIKON-BœHRLE AG 20 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 12870/72 Heading F3A A projectile comprises a projectile body 1 and a sabot 5 attached thereto by projections 22 extending from a longitudinally segmented sleeve 6 into one or more grooves 7, the projections having been forced into the grooves by deformation of the material of the segments with a punch. A nylon sleeve 23, formed with a driving band 24 and longitudinal grooves 26, carries a plastic hood 27. The flank 9 of groove 7 has a smaller angle of opening than flank 8. When the projectile is fired, a closure element 30 of the hood is ruptured by the dynamic air pressure and the hood itself is destroyed by centrifugal force whilst still in the barrel of the weapon. As the projectile leaves the muzzle of the weapon, the sleeve 23 is destroyed by centrifugal force, thereby allowing the segments of sleeve 6 to hinge outwardly and be torn off by centrifugal force. The sabot, which is made of an aluminium alloy, then separates from the projectile body.
