Abstract
1321264 Sabot projectiles PACIFIC TECHNICA CORP 6 July 1970 [29 Aug 1969] 32643/70 Heading F3A A sabot projectile comprises a sub-calibre core 16, Fig. 2, and a discardable sabot comprising a base portion 38, a cylindrical portion divided into segments 22 by slits which extend longitudinally over part of the length of the cylindrical portion, and a tapered nose portion 24. Weakening grooves 46 are provided in the nose portion. A band 44 holds the segments 22 together. Upon firing the projectile through a rifled barrel, a plastics or soft metal driving band 12 causes the projectile to rotate. When the projectile emerges from the barrel, the band 44 is broken as the segments 22 being to separate under the action of centrifugal force. The separation of the segments is initiated at the aft end of the segments and progresses forwardly. The nose portion 24 also disintegrates into segments defined by the weakening grooves 46. The separation of the cylindrical and nose portion segments is assisted by the muzzle gasas from the firing weapon. The sub-calibre core 16 and the sabot base portion 38 are separated through the greater air resistance of the base portion. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shcwn) the longitudinal grooves dividing the cylindrical portion into segments have a sawtooth configuration. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the cylindrical and nose portions of the sabot are integral and the grooves 64 which divide the cylindrical portion into segments increase in depth rearwardly but do not extend to the surface of the sub-calibre core. A bore 70 enables a tracer, carried by the sub-calibre core, to be ignited by hot propellant gases. The subcalibre core may comprise a mass of dense material or one or more flechettes, or may be explosive.
