Abstract

1362024 Fibrillated structures HERCULES INC 7 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 31997/71 Headings D1F DIR and D1W A net comprises parallel, longitudinallyoriented relatively thick thermoplastic fibres extending diagonally and continuously across the net, the fibres having a constant length, thickness and cross-section and being interconnected by relatively thin fibrils having their ends connected to adjacent fibres. The fibres may be from 2 to 30 inches long, and may extend at an angle of at least 45‹ to the nets' transverse axis. The net may be twisted to form a span strand in such a manner that at least some of the fibre ends protrude from the strand. The strand may have 1 to 10 twists per inch. A plurality of strands may be plied. The net is formed by passing extruded sheet 9 between grooved embossing rolls and backup roll 7 to produce diagonal sheet ribs joined by their webs. The sheet is then stretched from two to eight times between draw rolls 11, 13, while allowing the sheet to neck down, is slit, and the webs are partially fibrillated in pneumatic fibrillations 21. Sheet 9 may alternatively be formed by an annular extrusion die having notched lips, the die either revolving and the resulting tube being cut longitudinally, or the die being stationary and the tube being cut on a helical path. The net is formed to strand by pneumatic twisters 23. The net webs may be completely fibrillated, the resulting structure being stabilized prior to twisting, e.g. by applying an adhesive which is removed after twisting. Polymers such as polyolefins, polyamides, polyesters and acrylics may be used.
