Abstract

1349680 Forming bulked composite yarns; false-twisting O-B RASMUSSEN 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970 2 April 1970] 27251/71 Headings DID D1F and D1W A yarn comprises a bundle of filamentary structures held to one another by polymeric material that surrounds the bundle at bonding zones spaced along the length of the yarn, the bundle being substantially free of the surrounding polymeric material in the intervening zones between the bonding zones and being in a generally bulky state in the intervening zones. The bundle may consist of a transversely compacted film, each pleat of which constitutes a filamentary structure of the bundle, or it may consist of filaments, staple fibres, fibrillated film, ribbons, non-woven fabrics &c or combinations of these. Fibre mixtures may be used such that heating of the yarn after solidification of the polymer gives rise to differential shrinkage of the fibres between the bonding zones. Alternatively, mixtures of elastomeric and stiffer fibres, monocomponent and crimped bicomponent fibres, or bicomponent fibres of differing crimp may be used. The polymer at each bonding zone may saturate the bundle or, preferably, be bonded to the outermost portion only of the bundle. In apparatus for producing the yarn, untwisted filamentary material 11 is delivered by feed rollers 13, 14, 15 to false twist rollers 16, 17 each of which comprises four outer sections which are reciprocated as the rollers rotate so that a twisting motion is imparted to the filamentary material where it passes tangentially through a semi-circular groove 32 in a roller 25 rotated at a speed corresponding to the linear speed of the material. The polymer is fed from an extruder 26 to radial channels opening at the bottom of the groove 32 whereby rings 24 of polymer are deposited on the filamentary materials. The rings are water cooled between the roller 25 and rollers 16, 17, and the yarn after it leaves pull-rollers 36, 37, may be heated. To avoid squeezing the rings 24 the sections of the rollers 16, 17 may be coated with soft rubber or provided with grooves spaced to correspond with the spacing between the rings. The yarn may be cut between the rings into short lengths for use as filling for pillows &c.
