Catalytic agents, preparation of; nitrogen oxides, catalytic production of by combustion of ammonia. - In the catalyst oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen oxides, the catalyst employed consists of a mixture of cobalt and aluminium oxides. The catalyst is preferably prepared by evaporating and igniting a solution of the mixed nitrates; but it may also be prepared by igniting the mixed sulphates, or by moistening the mixed oxides or hydroxides to form a paste and heating the mixture; and the catalyst may be deposited on a carrier such as pumice. The best results are obtained when the temperature to which the mixture of oxides is heated during the preparation of the catalyst, is lower than the temperature which would prevail in the catalysing chamber; thus if the latter temperature is from 650-850‹ C., then the catalyst should be prepared at a temperature between 360-650‹ C.
