Abstract
1361434 Substituent interchange in silanes GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 Nov 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 55421/71 Heading C3S Interchange of substituents is effected between mixtures of compounds of formulae R a H b SiCl 4-a-b and R<SP>1</SP> c H d SiCl 4-c-d in proportions such that the former is present to the extent of more than 10 mole per cent of the initial mixture of the two compounds, at temperatures above 50‹ C. in the presence of an AlCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , KAlCl 4 , CuCl, H 3 BO 3 or BF 3 catalyst, optionally in admixture with a magnesium promoter, wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> denote alkyl or aryl a is 0, 1, 2, or 3, b is 1, 2 or 3, c is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, d is 0, 1, 2, or 3, a and c are dissimilar and there is at least one chlorine atom present in one of the two compounds. In examples mixtures of mainly trimethylchlorosilane and methylhydrodichlorosilane give high yields of dimethylchlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane, and mixtures of mainly methyldichlorosilane and trimethylchlorosilane give high yields of dimethylhydrochlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane.
